Generally speaking, the Inland Empire is usually considered the San Bernardino and Riverside metro areas as far west as Ontario/Rancho Cucamonga. Once a major citrus and agricultural center, the IE has changed over time and is adapting to a modern economy. People often move to the more relaxed suburbs of the Inland Empire in search of affordable housing away from the urban centers of Los Angeles and Orange County. In doing so, they find a centralized location less than an hour from the snow and fresh air of the mountain resorts, about an hour from the beach cities, and an hour from the low desert resorts like Palm Springs. However, with plenty of local activities, like professional sports, outdoor adventures, and cultural/artistic centers and events, you don’t often need to leave. Many residents still commute to LA, Orange County, and even San Diego while maintaining an IE home.
